How we score Brisbane childcare centres
Brisbane Childcare Directory currently scores 70 childcare centre businesses across Brisbane. Every score comes from a fixed set of measured signals applied the same way to each business. Nothing here is a matter of opinion about which centre "feels" better. It's a rubric, applied consistently, and published so parents can see exactly what went into a number before they act on it.
The five signals, and why each one matters
Choosing a childcare centre is not like choosing a cafe. You're trusting someone with your kid, often for years, so we weight the signals toward what actually predicts a good or bad experience rather than what's easiest to measure.
Sentiment: 28%
This is the heaviest signal, deliberately. We read recent reviews and synthesise the themes in them, praise and complaints alike, rather than just counting stars. A star average can hide a lot: two centres can both sit at 4.3 stars while one has a string of recent reviews about the same problem (say, staff turnover, or being told to collect a sick child at short notice) and the other doesn't. You only catch that pattern by reading what people actually wrote. Stars alone won't show it.
Rating: 26%
The Google aggregate star rating is still a strong, simple signal of overall satisfaction, so it carries the second-heaviest weight. It's just not the whole picture on its own, which is why sentiment sits above it rather than being replaced by it.
Volume: 20%
A centre with 4 reviews and a centre with 400 shouldn't be treated as equally certain. We log-scale review volume so that going from 5 to 50 reviews matters a lot, and going from 300 to 350 matters less, which reflects how confidence in a rating actually builds.
Recency: 12%
Childcare centres change: new directors, new staff, renovated rooms, different management. A glowing review from four years ago tells you less than a handful from recent months. Recency rewards centres with an active, current stream of feedback.
Completeness: 14%
Whether a centre lists a working phone number, website, hours and address sounds administrative, but for a parent trying to book a tour or sort out enrolment during a lunch break, it's practical friction that matters. It also tends to reflect how well-run the day-to-day admin of a centre is.
Confidence and honesty limits
Some centres in the directory have very few recent reviews. When that's the case, we label the score as low-confidence rather than presenting it with false precision. A score built on three reviews from two years ago isn't wrong to show, but it's not the same kind of evidence as one built on a hundred recent ones, and we say so on the page.
We also don't republish reviews wholesale. We synthesise what recent reviews say into plain themes, and we link out to Google so you can read the original source yourself and form your own view.
What never changes the score
Scores are earned from this rubric and the underlying data, full stop. They are never hand-edited. Where paid placement exists anywhere on this site, it is always labelled clearly as such and it never changes a business's score. Where a list involves editorial judgment about picks or ordering, such as our long day care guide, that involvement is disclosed on the page itself.
Who's behind this
Brisbane Childcare Directory is published by Scout Local Media, an independent Australian publisher that has built local directories since 2026, based on published review data and public business information kept current through monthly refresh cycles. The aim is simple: give Brisbane families what they need to shortlist a centre with confidence, while giving good local operators a fair way to be found. Rankings are earned, never bought.
Editorial oversight of this directory sits with Mei Larsen, Editorial Lead. You can reach the team at hello@scoutlocalmedia.com.au, or visit scoutlocalmedia.com.au for more on how we work. You can also browse the full Brisbane childcare directory from the home page.
FAQ
- How is the childcare centre score calculated?
- It's a weighted composite of five signals: sentiment (28%), Google star rating (26%), review volume log-scaled (20%), recency of reviews (12%) and listing completeness like phone, website, hours and address (14%). Each business is scored the same way against this rubric.
- Why does sentiment matter more than the star rating?
- A star average can hide patterns. Two centres can share the same rating while one has recent reviews repeatedly flagging the same issue. Reading what reviews actually say catches that in a way an average alone can't.
- What does a low-confidence label mean?
- It means a centre has few recent reviews, so the score is based on limited evidence. We label these scores clearly rather than presenting them with the same certainty as centres with a large, recent review base.
- Can a childcare centre pay for a better score?
- No. Scores come only from the rubric and data described on this page. Where paid placement exists anywhere on the site it is labelled and does not affect scoring, and any editor-reviewed list discloses that on the page itself.
